In a continuation of the SEO Playoffs we did a couple of weeks ago, I thought I would finalize things by having the two winners face off in the championship game. I’m avoiding the actual label to avoid getting sued by the NFL, as you see they are having a lot of legal battles lately and fining players for hats and not talking. Don’t need them coming after me.
Also want to remind you that all of these facets of SEO are important, and there really isn’t a winner. This was done in fun to outline some of the benefits and important factors of each element in a fun setup. You really need to be good at all of these things to succeed. That being said, how does this game play out?
SEO Tale of the Tape:
Less Technical Conference Champion:
OFF PAGE SEO
Off Page SEO is crucial because it is a huge factor in your site strength. It is called off page because it involves getting off site relationships or “inbound links” to your site. This helps prove to Google and other engines that you are reputable because other sites are willing to send their visitors to you. This is like the referral in the real world. It is the heart of your domain strength and link metrics are a huge factor in what you can rank for. You can aim your pages all you want, but if your site isn’t strong enough, it won’t show up on that first page. Off Page tends to take up the biggest part of your time and budget. With all the scams and cheats out there, it is also important to stay on top of the rules, as many sites get penalized for not building links the right way.
More Technical Conference Champion:
IN PAGE SEO
In Page SEO involves the technical aspects of SEO that have been growing in importance in recent years and especially in 2014. This factor is like the wild card team that gets hot at the end of the year and then makes a run through the playoffs. Google has been becoming more technically proficient at measuring these factors so things like mobile friendliness, site speed, and site errors (links to nowhere, duplicate content, etc.) have grown in importance and can be the difference between success and failure. In page work can be extremely tedious on big sites that have not been keeping themselves neat can clean and can be the primary piece of an audit or helping a site get out of trouble with Google. Due to the massive variance in how much this can help or hurt you, in the football analogy, it is inconsistent.
The Winner: Off Page SEO wins this battle out of its consistent importance, constant need for attention, and increasing complication of how to follow the rules. As I mentioned at the top of this piece, all facets of SEO are important and need to be attended to, but for the sake of our football fun, Off Page SEO is the champion now.
