I’m sure you’ve gotten one, or maybe several.  That email saying your site has failed it’s SEO test or Local search test and has a number of confusing pieces that say your site is just a complete mess and you should probably take up this person from a random gmail account or some company you never heard of to solve all of your problems.

The failed test is a long time hack tool spammy SEO companies use to try to scare business owners in to hiring them. Interestingly, some of my most successful SEO clients seem to get the most?  Why, because they are showing up in search and these people that do this go out and search for companies online.  They found them by searching and then take the contact info from the site and send one of these scare emails. If you weren’t getting found online you wouldn’t even show up on their radar.  Though some buy their contact lists using other tactics, many just find you through online tools, so receiving these SEO fail emails is actually a sign of progress.

The truth is that even the most successful sites still have work to do. That is why SEO is an ongoing practice.  Since we don’t all have unlimited budget to fix things and make things right immediately and since the SEO world is evolving and always takes work to show up for new terms or strengthen your rankings, there is always something to work on. Many of these emails are just generic and say you could rank better. Some of the less lazy schemers will actually plug your site in and focus on anything negative they can find.  You can’t rank for everything, so there are always terms they can show you for which you don’t rank.  There are thousands of directories out there, so there are always directories they can show that you aren’t in. Some of these services even create their own directories that you aren’t in just so they can show you that you aren’t in them and fail you. It is all quite ridiculous.

If you are doing SEO and get one of these failure emails, don’t be alarmed.  It is probably a good thing. It can be a good way for your SEO to take you through the different pieces and explain things more. You can learn a little more about the elements of SEO and what your SEO is working on, but keep in mind the tests are designed for you to fail s don’t worry too much.

If you are ready to take that next step and get a good SEO plan going, please give us a shout. We would love to help you out so you start getting found and get even more of these failed test emails.
